People often wonder why Carmageddon is both violent and enjoyable to play. As stated, the reason is that people playing the game can discover some humorous hidden features at the same time they drive around destroying other cars and hitting pedestrians. When racing, players must complete all three objectives in a certain amount of time or wait for the race to end. However, it's more exciting to see what the missions are than to just keep driving until the message "Time Ends" pops up. Each race world has three goals in common. These are listed below. Players must checkpoints, destroy all opponents, kill all pedestrians and first accomplish the first goal. The second and third goals are more challenging but still easy to understand. First, players need to drive well enough to smash enemies while hitting pedestrians without wasting time. Next, they need to creatively destroy opponents' cars or carrfully run over pedestrians for more time and points. When you complete this mission, people regard the hardest one to perform. There are over 400 people on the map; they’ll try to get out of your way when they sense danger. They exhibit unique behavior and reactions, shifting from side to side or back and forth. Some also exhibit early or delayed responses.

The race can occur in a variety of locations such as mineshafts, chemical plants, beaches and the Arizona desert. Each location features unique race decor including street furniture and a stunning sky. The race includes a large number of obstacles that must be carefully monitored. Mines line the course, and failing to notice them can cause you to bounce off the ground. Watch out for jelly traps that bounce cars around, as well as swinging swords and double-edged pins. To avoid being caught in any of these obstacles, racers should stay focused and outpace their competitors. When racing with other cars, racers should expect to be destroyed by concrete barriers. Players earn extra credits when a bonus is earned because of a message on the screen. This encourages players to gain more bonuses for even greater benefits. Additional style bonuses, head-on bonuses and Cunning Stunt Bonuses add new abilities to the game. Players can also swim and destroy cars or pedestrians with weapons. Several pedestrian bonuses exist, including Extra Style Bonus, Splatter Bonus and Damage Bonuses.

Players start the race with The Eagle, a metal vehicle that withstands almost any circumstance. Conversely, The Hawk is a more nimble and speedy car with a higher chance of success. Confronting the latter proves easy, as there are 30 cars that can be accessed during the game. You earn money while racing by performing stunts, attacking cars, doing damage to pedestrians or ing checkpoints. This can be used to repair your car or purchase upgrades. Finishing races also grants you experience and monetary rewards. To repair a car after flipping it or wrecking it, players need coins. They can earn more coins by buying parts from the Parts Shop that improve armor, offense, or power of a car. More effective parts cost more coins.

The game is played in third-person perspective. It can be difficult to view the game from first-person perspective due to the controls being on a touchscreen located in the lower half of the screen. The top portion of the screen features car damage and other stats, which makes it easy to focus on racing. In addition to digital, there are three other control schemes: analog, which use a moving bar; tilt, which utilizes a knob; and a universal scheme.

Many cars feature a small amount of reflective paint when being driven. This causes them to spin and flip out of control, aggravating gamers and taking up unnecessary time. Ineffective control options make it difficult to properly adjust the camera angle or movement speed. Players have to restart the game when menus become unresponsive. You can’t complete your task of killing pedestrians on one given map due to the number of people involved.

The original Carmageddon from 1997 has the same car models and graphics as the current version. However, the colors don't quite match in this older version of the game. The game offers high frame rates consistently. The game can enable or disable land and car shadows.

The music in the game comes from Fear Factory and Lee Groves. The game's sounds haven't changed since a version released years ago on a PC.
